spam

So does "spam" stand for something?

And why is it so prevalent?

Are there actually people who go to the sites of spammers?

You can respond anonymously if you want, but have any of my readers EVER, even ONCE, clicked on a link sent by a spammer? And again, anonymous response is fine, but have you ever clicked on one to a porn or clicked on a link that suggest that certain parts of your anatomy are not large enough (you know... ah... your... liver). And if so... and with the knowledge of spyware and cookies and all kinds of crap, why in the WORLD did you do this?

I'm serious.

Hey, I love your blog it's real great!

I have a american singles site/blog. It pretty much covers american singles and dating related stuff.

I'm terribly amused that your first comment to a post on spamming was spam. Spam does stand for something, but I don't remember what, and it's pretty tech-nerd anyway.

I've clicked on them before, out of curiosity. Not very prudent, I agree, but I don't do it often. Not off your blog that I recall, and not to porn-suggesting or dating sites. Some dork posted spam on my blog regarding my lack of joy in life. I went to his site, then immediately decided to use the spam-blocking feature for my blog. I don't even remeber what the dude's site was...I think it was online degrees or something.

I thought Spam was just named Spam because it, like it's namesake the meat product, is something that no one actually wants.

no way! people in hawaii LOVE spam. I went through a spam phase once, with a couple of t-shirts and everything.

check out this COOL SITE

I find spam emails can be very inspirational. since the invention of specialized mail filters, they have had to get a little more creative to make it to your inbox.

I read an article in newsweek a year or two ago that suggested that 90% of all spam comes from a handful of superusers who do it for a living. because think about it, email is free. so you send free solicitations to millions of people, and all you need is one person to believe you.

I hate spam. I hate the preying nature behind it. I hate that they generally go for human vice and desensitize you to the point that fairly suggestive title lines become hilarious rather than disturbing. it makes me not want my kids to go online until they're grownups. (can you imagine?) -rachel

Actually, I thought it came from a Monty Python skit at a breakfast diner where all the entrees had spam. Spam egg and sausage, spam and bacon, etc., but there was NOTHING without spam, to the great frustration of one diner and the befuddlement of everyone else.

Summarizing the Pythons rarely works well so I will shut up and provide a link.

rachel's COOL SITE link makes the connection between the canned food product and the skit. but it's always good to review a monty python skit, i say.

so, i'm curious: you only want to know if people have clicked on the suggestive or porn spam [er... sporn?]...?

no... I just want to know if anyone has ever gone to a spam site in general... but i think the porn ones seem particularly ah.. well... infected? Like you would need a penicillin shot just to go there. (And I do understand the allure of porn... but to click on a link to porn seems dangerous.)
