Who do they think Jesus was??? Or Stephen, the first martyr? Or the disciples (history has all but John dying horrible deaths)?
Playing devil's advocate for a moment: I can see the appeal of their worldview--it's simple. There are no unanswered questions or doubt. Bad people have bad things happen to them, and Christians do not.
My guess is the majority of Christians would distance themselves from this perspective. I do think it's disgusting. Let people grieve in peace.
But the comments below the article are interesting. As one pointed out, certainly the media could have selected this small minority of people simply because it does fire people up.
I know other churchs offered more positive responses- a place for students to gather and stay, counseling, home-cooked food.
Among the obvious "these people are insane and I hate them" comments I feel like leaving (I know, i know, i need to work on that), one thing that I think is kind of funny, is that they apparently think that America has embraced homosexuality. Certainly there are pockets here and there where gay people feel accepted and comfortable, but in my experience, the gay people that I know don't feel accepted by the general public and are basically afraid of and freaked out by Christians in general.
I read recently in a really wise man's blog that "we need to take our bitterness and rage to the cross." This kind of thing makes me insanely bitter...that when I confess to being a Christian, I have to distance myself so purposefully from these crazies. How did we let Jesus be associated with this crap? I need to take that bitterness to the cross and not just be cynical and bitter and full of rage about it. But can't we do something else too?
Like, I love that photo of that biker dude punching out the KKK grand wizard. I totally admit, Jesus probably wouldn't do that. But that's what I feel like doing.

"What wouldn't Jesus do?"
Wear white after Labor Day?
Seriously, though, this disgusts me. I don't even know what else to say.
what in the HELL is wrong with people.
mdog - my thoughts exactly!
I wonder what Jesus would have to say about their protest?
“The evidence is they were not Christian. God does not do that to his servants,” Phelps-Roper said.
What would they have to say about Martin Luther King Jr.? Nothing I suppose, since they really aren't making rational arguments.
