Haggard Update

Those of you who follow this site know that I have blogged about Haggard before. I find the whole situation so interesting. Recently, Haggard was featured in an HBO special. I have seen several interviews with him in the past couple of weeks, including the one below. My take is that he actually seems to be getting perspective and maybe healing. I'm curious to know what you, my loyal readers think.

Wow! I hadn't heard about this till now, or if I had, I didn't pay much attention. I think he has insight, and a very devoted wife who loves him A LOT. I was glad to hear him give her credit, talk about how strong she was and the like. I am sorry that a choice he made has taken him down this road. But we are formed by the choices we make and as a result the roads we walk down.

I'm ashamed of the fact that the church turned their back on his family, the way they did. To ask him to step down is fine, to ask them to leave the church, unacceptable, at least to me. Aren't we as the body of Christ to reach out to the broken, lost and confused? When his wife and children needed them the most their "body of Christ" deserted them.

Homosexuality is a complicated thing. To make it a black and white issue is to oversimplify it.

I noticed that they both talk about things in past tense (I WAS brokenhearted, etc.).

I think our tendency after going through any sort of crisis is to look for the first moment when we can say that everything is now, officially, behind us. I don't think it's ever that clear cut and we do ourselves a disservice to try to impose such distinctions.

I just went through a half-day training on sexual addictions. It really gave me deeper compassion. I wish the training had been, like, a year long instead of a few hours.

My friend went through a similar "fall from grace" in my home church, but I was so encouraged at the reaction of our elders to offer forgiveness and counseling (after accepting his resignation). They even had a going away event for him so that people who wanted to could say "I forgive you" face to face. I think their openness saved our church and spoke to a lot of people in the community.
